iPhone-ish Virtual Keyboard for the Nokia N800

It seems like everyone wants their device to look and act like an iPhone, as opposed to just getting an iPhone.  At least in the US.  Some clever folks in Brazil have written a utility for the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet that mimics the on-screen keyboard of the Apple iPhone.  You know, the keyboard that iPhone owners either love or hate.  Anyway, the keyboard that will run on the N800 is written in Python and looks pretty spiffy in this video:

iPod Touch Can Run All Apple and Third-Parties' iPhone Apps

You may be asking yourself where are Mail, Weather, Google Maps or Stocks in the new iPod touch. The answer: they are coming, but probably not from Apple. The iPod runs Mac OS X like the iPhone does and we have got unofficial word from inside Apple that it runs exactly the same applications. The exact quote: "they use the same damn binaries."

Controlling a car via phone is easy on the phone side

Now, I’m sure an iPhone SDK will lead to some amazing apps (and a ton of lame ones) but honestly, I think many developers started bitching a bit too early and too loudly last year when Apple announced the iPhone was going to allow for “Safari-only” apps. I understand the major arguments for wanting an iPhone SDK – chiefly, “how the hell do you make money on a web app?” – and I understand an SDK should open up more control over the look and feel of the app, and (hopefully) some new access to the iPhone’s underpinnings, etc.. But the one argument I heard thrown about that I will no longer blindly accept is that Apple’s web app solution was too limiting, at least not after Delphi’s demonstration at CES this week.

Flat, black and all that. New IPhone killer

Since Apple’s iPhone was such a runaway success, the entire mobile phone industry has been playing catch-up with the pocket wonder. Jonathan Ive’s (Apple’s Chief of Design) minimal flat black screen design has instantly become a gadget icon and seems to be the inevitable future of mobile phone designs for everyone looking to grab market share. The problem with this design direction is the very limited aesthetic potential. How many ways can you reinterpret the flat black touchscreen screen? Well designer Jaren Goh has done a pretty decent job of putting his own spin on this movement with his “Basic Tab” mobile phone design. He has masterfully taken softer side out of the iPhone silhouette and gave it a more edgy, masculine appearance. His clever use of red translucent materials mixed with chrome harkens more retro future funk sci-fi creations like 2001 A Space Odysseys “HAL 9000″ and the Cylons on Battlestar Gallactica.

Jailbroken iPhone 3G gets external keyboard, says "Hello"

If you're one of those people always complaining about the iPhone keyboard (the lack of one, that is), then this is probably a vital piece of news, even if it's not totally practical. Or practical in any way, actually. Some very enterprising citizen of the world seems to be running a chunk of Ruby code on his jailbroken iPhone 3G, which allows it to recognize what appears to be a Palm / Visor external keyboard connected via a custom cable. The results of this intense bit of modification? Well -- not much, honestly, but it's still kinda cool. "Hello Keyboard," indeed. Check out the video of it in action after the break.

Vietnamese iPhone Unlock Isn't for the Faint of Heart
